Why will you not get the job at your next interview?

It’s crucial to ask this for four reasons:

  • It forces you to be honest and, in doing so, identify what your real development goal is.
  • It stretches you, taking you out of your comfort zone. You may be operating at a high level in your current role but if you are looking to ‘step up’ then the recruiter – especially an external recruiter – wants to see evidence of you performing at the next level.
  • It gives you time to do something about it. You can be developing that area now, or getting the qualification that you need.
  • If and when your circumstances change, you are in prime position to get the job you most want.
